SERIES — DEV KUMAR · MALAYSIA

Silent Encounters

ABOUT THE PHOTOS

Silent Encounters brings together five intimate monochromatic portraits of great apes — a mountain gorilla and four orangutans. Rather than focusing on spectacle or action, the series explores quiet moments of presence, expression, and connection. Each image reveals a distinct personality through the animals' eyes, gestures, textures, and contemplative stillness. The absence of colour draws attention to light, form, texture, and facial expression, transforming these wildlife encounters into timeless fine-art portraits that invite the viewer to pause, observe, and reflect.

✦ EDITOR'S NOTE

Kumar brings five great apes so close that hair, skin and eyelids govern the frame. With habitat held beyond view, distinctions emerge through the smallest actions: foliage at a gorilla's mouth, a limb drawn across the body, eyes meeting ours, glancing aside, then closing. Monochrome intensifies these variations, from deep shadow to the silver filaments across an orangutan's face. The sequence honours stillness by allowing sustained attention itself to become the event.
